Today is His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama's 78th birthday. As a global icon of peace, His Holiness gives millions of people from all walks of life the hope and belief that a better world is possible.
For Tibetans, His Holiness is a leader who - despite taking the mantle of leadership during what was perhaps the darkest chapter of Tibetan history - has carried out visionary democratic reforms within the Tibetan government and kept the struggle for freedom on the nonviolent path.
Through his commitment to democracy and nonviolence, His Holiness has sent a message to Tibetans and people everywhere that Tibetan values are universal and in keeping with modern times. In this regard, His Holiness has positioned Tibetans far ahead of the Chinese Communist Party and their authoritarian system of government in China.
At Students for a Free Tibet, we take the lessons of democracy and nonviolence that His Holiness has taught us very seriously and we are working every day to give His Holiness a gift that will complement his tireless work and enlightened vision: a new generation of Tibetans and youth activists who are free and critical thinkers, who advocate democratic and progressive values, and who are experts in advanced strategic nonviolent resistance strategies.
In addition to waging hard-hitting campaigns and actions that raise the cost of China's occupation of Tibet, at SFT we are equipping young Tibetan movement leaders with the vision, strategy, and skills to advance the cause of Tibetan freedom through nonviolent methods.
Though Tibetans are now going through one of the most difficult periods in our history, we remain undefeated and unconquered. In the words of His Holiness, "The Tibetan spirit is very, very strong - it will remain."
On this beautiful day we celebrate the birth of an icon and we re-commit ourselves to our critical work using advanced nonviolent strategies to achieve freedom in Tibet and peace in the world.
