tudents, activists hold support vigil for language protests in Tibet

Dharamsala, November 2 – Students for a Free Tibet India held acandlelight march and rally on Monday in solidarity with Tibetan students inTibet who are asserting their right to study in their own language.

Last week, an estimated 6,000 Tibetans, mostly students, in the Tibetanprovince of Amdo (Chinese: Qinghai Province) protested the Qinghai ProvincialGovernment’s decision to replace Tibetan with Chinese as the medium ofinstruction in Tibetan schools. Tibetan students in the neighbouring Tibetanprovince of Kham (Chinese: Gansu Province and Sichuan Province) and in Beijinghave held solidarity protests.

“Language is the foundation of Tibetan culture and this recent attackon our language reveals the Chinese governments’ sinister attempt to assimilateTibetans into Chinese society,” said Tenzin Choedon, National Director ofStudents for a Free Tibet India. “Students across Tibet have spoken out clearlyagainst this discriminatory policy and students worldwide are taking action toamplify their voices and support their demand for freedom of language.”

The protests by Tibetans followed similar protests by Cantonesespeakers earlier this year. In July 2010, nearly 8,000 Chinese people marchedin Guangzhou, China to protest Beijing's plans to replace Cantonese withMandarin in state television broadcasts. Authorities relented, agreeing tomaintain Cantonese language broadcasts, and no widespread crackdown on theprotesters occurred.
チベット人による抗議は、今年始め、広東の発言者によって類似した抗議が続きました。2010年7月に、ほぼ8,000人の中国人は、広州にて 国営テレビ放送に関して広東語を北京語と入れ替える北京政府の計画に抗議する事で行進しました。広東の言語放送を維持することに同意して、当局は折れました、そして、抗議者に対する広範囲にわたる取締りは起こりませんでした。
“It is the inalienable right of every Tibetan to learn in their ownlanguage. We call on governments around the world to press the Chinesegovernment to respect Tibetan language rights,” said Tenzin Dorjee, ExecutiveDirector of Students for a Free Tibet. The Tibetan students' actions over thelast two weeks are the largest protests in Tibet since 2008.
「自分自身の言語で学ぶことは、あらゆるチベット人の 奪うことのできない権利です。我々は、世界中の政府に中国政府にチベットの言語権利を尊重するよう迫るように頼みます」と、テンジンDorjee（ＳＦＴ議長）が言いました。この2週にわたるチベットの学生の行動 は、2008年以降チベットで最も大きな抗議です。
Tibetan teachers are also concerned about the new language policy. Morethan two hundred teachers signed an appeal letter on October 10th to Chineseauthorities emphasizing the negative impact the policy would have on theirstudents’ academic performance and intellectual growth. Just days ago, RadioFree Asia reported that Uyghur students and teachers were also expressingwidespread support for the Tibetan language protests.

Students for a Free Tibet India collected petition signatures duringthe rally addressed to China’s Ambassador to India, Mr. Zhang Yan, calling onthe Chinese government to allow Tibetans to use Tibetan as the medium ofinstruction. The petition also calls on Chinese authorities to ensure that noone involved in the protests be persecuted for their actions.
インドＳＦＴの学生は、中国政府にチベット人が指導の言葉としてチベット語を使用するのを許すように要請し、 中国のインド（チャンYan氏）大使に向けて演説される集会の間に、嘆願書サインを集めました。嘆願書は、中国当局への抗議に関係する誰もが その行動のため弾圧されないことを確実にするように ようせいしています。
