I'm writing to you from Dharamsala, India, located in the foothills of the Himalayas.

http://sft.convio.net/images/content/pagebuilder/Our_Land_Our_People.jpgOver the past three days, thousands of Tibetan exiles have had the opportunity to set foot on Tibetan soil.

On Wednesday morning, Tenzing Rigdol, Tibetan artist and a close friend of SFT, held an historic art installation titled "Our Land, Our People" by spreading 20,000 kg of soil from Tibet on an open stage at the Tibetan Children's Village in Dharamsala.

A sense of joy, sorrow, hope, and inspiration gripped the exile community. The recently elected Prime Minister of the Tibetan Government in Exile, Dr. Lobsang Sangay, was the first person to set foot on the soil. Many Tibetans followed, offering prayers and prostrations, while others read poetry, delivered impromptu speeches, and sang traditional songs. Children played in the soil while elders shed tears of nostalgia.

For some, it was the first time in more than fifty years that they had walked on Tibetan soil; for many born in exile it was their first time ever. As I watched Tibetans young and old reconnect with our land, I was inspired by the transgressive power of art and creativity in our freedom struggle.

On the morning of the opening, Rigdol presented His Holiness the Dalai Lama with a plate of the soil. His Holiness took one look at it and proceeded to write བོད་ (Tibetan word for "Tibet"). It was incredibly uplifting to witness His Holiness draw this most simple yet powerful message in the soil, unequivocally claiming it as Tibet – our beloved homeland.

http://sft.convio.net/images/content/pagebuilder/tendor_training.jpgLast week, in the lead up to "Our Land, Our People," SFT India held the 14th Free Tibet! Action Camp. Through our flagship week-long camps, SFT has trained thousands of Tibetans and supporters in the art of nonviolent direct action, strategic and creative campaigning, media and messaging, and digital activism.

This year, SFT India hosted over 40 participants from Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkotta, Kathmandu, Baroda, Pune, Ladakh, and Dharamsala. Many of the Tibetan participants were born and raised in Tibet, having escaped over the Himalayas to seek freedom and education in exile.


In spite of the rigorous training schedule, there was an incredible energy and enthusiasm among the participants and organizers. The recent self-immolations and spiraling crisis in Tibet added a heightened sense of urgency to our work.

I am confident that in the coming days the graduates of Free Tibet! Action Camp XIV will apply their skills and tools to amplify the voices of Tibetans inside Tibet.

This Wednesday, November 2nd, Tibetans and supporters in over 60 cities around the world will take to the streets and cry out ENOUGH, calling for Global Intervention to Save Tibetan Lives. I hope you will join me in this global day of action for Tibet.
